Do you guys visit the fantastic, vintage-themed design blog, Modern Kiddo? Modern Kiddo is curated by San Francisco mamas Dottie and Alix. Alix is mamma to the curly-headed Wolfgang (Wolfie), and Dottie's little sweetie is the brilliantly nicknamed Georgia (Peach).
This is a great place to visit if you love vintage kids' stuff. Dottie and Alix feature vintage toys, clothes, shoes, and even host a kids vintage book club. You will also find super costume and craft ideas, new toys to check out and great vintage inspired rooms. Another terrific feature is their weekly kiddo profile, where kids are profiled for their great styles... and often very stylish names accompany them!

Alix and Dottie have also inspired me to start a new feature here on Marginamia: Thrifted names. I'll show what we thrift and the names found in the thrifted stuff, from the pages of beautifully illustrated books to names inspired by vintage silk blouses. Stay tuned!
There will also be more heaping, special-themed name lists (where I actually use my own noodle to come up with names, as opposed to just spotting them) and designer profiles coming soon!

I look forward to seeing your thrifted names lists! One of the most fascinating things to me about helping my mother when she was cleaning up her parents' estate a few years ago were the great vintage books and the names in them.
ReplyDeleteThere were a lot of The Five Little Peppers books, and they had some great names:
-Phronsie (Sophronia)...which is a pretty fantastic name in contrast to its meaning: "sensible"
-Polly (Mary)
-Ben (Ebenezer)
-Davie (David)
-Joel
-Horatio
-Jasper
Then there was The Adventures of Tippy
The dedication is to Lloyd, Cookie, Do, Roger, Lila, Wally, Cyrilla, Matty, and Little Cora...and these are some of the names in the story itself:
-Sir Ignatius Tippitolio
-Oriella
-Titus
-Beatrix
-Tobias
-Simon
-Cornelius
-Fritz
-Kaspar
-Josi
That's probably enough for now, ha! Vintage books are so much fun - and they look great on the shelf too.
I love the name Zelda.
ReplyDeleteI also like Zola ... and Zora, too (after one of my favorite writers, Zora Neale Hurston).
Also, a bit off-subject, have you done a post on street names, neighborhoods, cities or states? For some reason, I recently found myself reflecting on my childhood home. I grew up on Verona Avenue in Sherwood, Arkansas. Verona (nn Vera or Nona) would make a lovely girl's name. Sherwood could be a suitable boy's name (nn Woody). Your thoughts? xo.
Milla Plum is an absolutely delightful name.
ReplyDeleteI love that blog! If my Bay had been a boy, she would have been named Wolf (a family name) and called Wolfie. Hazel, Ruby, and Georgia are or have been on my list, too. I love that they call Georgia "Peach," that's the cutest!
ReplyDeleteLove this collection of names! Georgia, nn Peach, is brilliant, and twins named Olive & Calder? Be still my heart!
ReplyDeleteMy friends recently had a Wolfgang (called Wolfie) and I hear both Bea and Birdie on the playground fairly often.
ReplyDeleteIngrid is an old favorite, and I've been really into Zelda lately.
Thrifted names are a great idea!
Peach is a wonderful nickname for Georgia. But I especially love Beatrice "Bea", Dorothy "Dottie", and Milla Plum.
ReplyDeleteLove Peach as a nickname for Georgia. So cute! I love a lot of these names.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Gosh! It's Dottie and I just saw this post and am so darn honored that you wrote about us and our Weekly Kiddos! We love 'em all and I've often been tickled pink by the names of these little sweeties! Thanks again!
ReplyDelete- Dottie
My pleasure, Dottie! Thanks for commenting. And thanks for the inspiration!
DeleteOoh there's my kid Felix! He's nearly 8 now - I think he was five in that photo.
ReplyDeleteWe're actually looking for a name for a third son, which is how I came across this article!
ReplyDeleteOh, congratulations! I hope the sight will be of some help, though it seems you don't need any! What is your second son's name?
