Hurricane Irene and tropical storm names

What do the amazing jewelry shop Odette New York (more on this in another post!),

this neato fabric and print shop, June craft,

Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine,

this iconic portrayal of Ophelia by Waterhouse,

and this Greek statue of Irene have in common...other than loveliness?

Odette, June, Florence, Ophelia and Irene are fantastic names! So fantastic, in fact, that they have been chosen to name some of the most powerful forces of nature, tropical storms. These are strong, striking, beautiful names for powerful forces of nature, art, myth and  us.
I find myself thinking about storm names after heading to the store to stock up for Irene (I know.) Irene is the goddess of peace! Let's hope she stays fairly peaceful.
There is  the whole association with the damage done by storms, and I want to be reverent about that, but here's the thing: these names have a vast history prior to being names of storms. My entire household and many relatives are represented here, as are yours, I imagine.  I really think it's interesting how many amazingly stylish names have been used on these storms
So here they are from this year and years past (they recycle), and from all parts of the globe (aside from the current Irene):

Seriously, what a savy set of names! I can scarcely find one that I don't really like. Is a name nerd selecting these names for storms that they revere and respect, that they put so much of their time into studying, or do the namers of storms find these to be unusable for people,so they're kind of toss aways? I find the latter extremely hard to believe. Not a bad name in this pack.

  1. Where to start? I guess one of the names on here that I really struggle to get my head around is Hamish, the others I'm all for, but Hamish and I have never gelled. I keep thinking of the man from the recent Alice in Wonderland film.

  2. Here's to hoping that Irene lives up to her name! I'm looking forward to the J. Crew post in celebration!

  3. Mere--I have the same association, but didn't some rocker or other recently name a son Hamish? I am fond of -ish ending names, but this one does remind me of Ham---yuck!

  4. Wow, hurricanes do alright for themselves don't they? Some of these names are just wonderful! I love Agnes, Iris, Florence, Hermione, Eloise, Fernanda, Winifred, Frances, Ruby, Esther, Priya (love this one! I rarely hear it but I think it is just the most beautiful name ever), Oscar, Jasper and Arthur. Children I know with these names are:
Iris (half-sisters Lily and Wren, and brother Linden)
Ophelia (middle name Sabine, sister Alexandra Imogene and brother Gabriel)
Hermione (brothers Oliver "Ollie"and Archibald "Archie", and sister Zoe)
    Eloise (brother Daniel)
    Fernanda (sister Clio)
    Winifred (nn Winnie, brother Marlo)
    Celia (brother Eli)
Nora (middle name Elisabeth, brother Brendan)
Wynne (variation on Winnie, and pronounced the same, brother Peregrine "Pip")
Iona (middle name Mavourneen, brother Dylan Harry)
Ulani (variation on Ulana, middle name Grace; also a little girl called River Ulani Francesca, who was originally just Ulani Francesca but her mum added River on when she was one after she dreamt it was her daughter's name. Sisters Fiora and Cassandra "Cassie" and brothers Jack and Noah)
    Heidi (sisters Ella and Greta)
Yvette (middle name Alice, brothers Jordan and Isaiah Joel)
Frances (middle name Aileen, brothers Alistair and Rory Andrew, sister Esther Isabella)
Ruby (so many! My sister Ruby Queen (and I've listed all our sisters before so I won't so it again), Ruby May (sister Neko Jane), Ruby Louise (brothers Harry Timothy, Jack Peter and Thomas Andrew), another Ruby Louise (brothers Joel Edwin Malibi, Finnian Robert "Finn" and Oliver "Ollie"), Ruby April (sisters Audra May and Eva June), Ruby Ciara (sister Freya Morgane)..
Gretel (sister Rachael, and daughter Alyssia)
Esther (mentioned above, and another one with a sister named Oonagh)
Claudia X 2 (1. sister Lola and brother Henry, 2. brothers Samuel and Dominic and sister Sigrid "Ziggy")
    Priya (half-sisters Lily and Wren)
    Freda (sister Shoshanna "Shoshi")
Oma (my youngest sister's nearly-name; she was going to be Oma Grace but instead she's Imogen Plum)
    Wiley (brother Louis)
    Gilbert (sister Charlotte)
Oscar (brother Spike and sister Hazel Eliza)
Leo (full name Leopold, sister Indigo)
    Frank (twin brother Fred)
Xavier (twin sisters Tamsin India and Olivia Lea)
    Hamish X 2 (1. sister Beatrice, 2. sister Sally)
Jasper X 2 (1. sisters Fushia, Nina and Chloe, and brother Charlie, 2. brother Piper and sister Milou)
    Arthur (sister Charlotte)
Beni (brothers Nico, Viliame "Vili" and Joshua "Josh", and sister Ninette "Nina")
Walter (sister Nicole and brother Jacob)
Reuben X 2 (1. sister Eva, 2. sister Maizie and brother Rainer)

I've done it again! I do this, I write these humongous lists of names I know and then I'm like "Um....Jessie you're taking up half of the internet with your ridiculously long comments." So I'm sorry! :S

  5. that was a great list of names, actually, and such cool sibsets.

I think I remember hearing a thing on t.v. that they in fact do have a system for naming these storms. The season starts out and they name it with a name beginning with a for the first storm, then the next storm will have a name starting with b, etc. In addition I think I remember them saying that they try to not pick such common names after Hurricane Andrew, people were upset that a name they use for their children was the name of a storm that caused such devastation. That explains choosing names like Floyd and Frances, but not Katrina, which seems to me a more common sort of name and considerably after Andrew. I 'think' the method between the boy name of a storm and a girl name is that they alternate? But I'm not sure, it could be tied to where they originate or something else.
